Causes of the widely prevalent PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) and latest treatment options in Ayush system were discussed by experts at a one day awareness programme organized Sona Medical College of Naturopathy and Yoga on September 6, 2021.
Dr. S. Madankumar, Principal, Sona Medical College of Naturopathy and Yoga in his address stated that PCOS which was once manifested rarely in elderly women even after third child delivery, is now found to affect girls before puberty. Stating that it is one among most common medical problems for girls he said this programme aimed at creating the awareness .
In his presidential address, Mr. Thyagu Valliappa, Vice Chairman, Sona Group of Institutions pointed out that health is not a problem but a challenge-the importance of which was realized during the pandemic. As regards PCOS among young girls he said there was need for clarity and understanding that even men should be aware of. “In the next 25 years this could affect the young girls directly or indirectly,” he said.
Stating that technology was revolutionizing life, Mr. Thyagu said the ancient Ayush system could see tremendous growth through technology. “Ayush system could be used to address in syndromes like PCOS and should be utilized more as it is a drugless method without side effects. Like the telemedicine and medicine on wheels, Sona Ayush will launch door-to-door delivery of health service soon. Taking yoga classes online Sona has reached 4000 people so far and the target was to reach 1 lakh persons by next August 2022,” he said underscoring the efforts taken at Sona in adding technology to traditional medicine.
Speaking about the opportunities in Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yoga Sciences course (BNYS), Mr.Thyagu said that it was a gateway to become a full-fledged doctor without taking NEET exams that students find very tough to crack. “Except surgery and anesthesia, a person who has undergone the 5 1/2 years BNYS course can handle all medical problems,” he said stressing on the value of becoming a doctor in Ayush system.
In her speech, Homeopathy Doctor. Dr.Janani Pari cautioned that the morbidity among girls was high with regard to PCOS and said that the major reason was stress. “Unlike in allopathic system which considers PCOS as a lifelong condition and prescribes harmful hormonal medicines, homeopathy treats PCOS as curable with a systemic level, mind-body treatment approach and a combination of medicines, yoga, exercise and diet,” she said.
Dr. Navin an Ayurvedha specialist said according to Ayurvedha system PCOS was caused because of increased contamination of body fluids that hindered egg production. Stating that the major cause was shift from traditional food habits, he outlined treatments like panchakarma, non-invasive methods, diet, herbal concoctions and other treatment advances in ayurvedha.
Naturopath, Dr.Sarathy explained how a combination of raw vegetables, juice therapy, acupuncture, mud bath, asanas, pranayama and kriyas in yoga would restore the energy balance, blood flow, reduce toxins and reduce cyst size.
